On Feb. 1, 2020, NEMG employees from the New London region braved the cold to raise money for the Groton Senior Center. As part of its sixth annual Souper Bowl Saturday event, volunteers joined both the Groton Police Department and Groton Town Mayor Patrice Granatowski to dish out soup to a sold-out crowd of 200.

Patrons purchased tickets to sample soups donated by 17 area restaurants. There was also a silent sports memorabilia auction. The event raised over $4,000 for the Groton Senior Center.

Reporters were on hand and the event was featured on Fox 61 News. Due to the overwhelming success, next year’s event has already been planned for Feb. 6.

“It was like a reunion for many of the staff and current or former patients,” said Kim Abell, clinical practice optimization specialist. “It was a great opportunity to network and visit with them outside of the office setting. This is a great event for the community and the outreach committee.”

“Our community outreach program connects us to our community by giving to those who can’t help themselves,” said Sonia Stavens, LPN. “We influence our community to grow and engage.”

“It’s my favorite event of the year,” said Jennifer Meakem, Groton Senior Center office assistant and event planner. “I absolutely love Souper Bowl Saturday.”
