Overview

Adults aged 50 and over should look forward to enjoying the fruits of their personal, family and professional labors. There’s so much to do — doting on grandchildren, traveling to places familiar and different, finding time for hobbies, maybe even launching a new career after retirement.

Yet aging gracefully also means remaining healthy, in body, mind and spirit. Northeast Medical Group geriatricians — board certified physicians who specialize in caring for older adults — understand the aging process. They work alongside other highly trained Northeast Medical Group specialists to make sure their patients maintain an active, fulfilling and safe quality of life, with as much dignity and independence as possible. Together they are advancing geriatric medicine as part of the Yale New Haven Health network of physicians and hospitals.

Our Approach to Geriatric Care

If necessary, geriatricians collaborate with other physicians, nurses, social workers and occupational therapists to deliver a personalized treatment plan. And because prevention against age-related complications is critical, they promote a healthy lifestyle comprising balanced nutrition, exercise and stress relief. Throughout the process, family members or others who provide daily care are consulted.

Based on years of education, training, research and hands-on experience in caring for older adults, Northeast Medical Group geriatric specialists recognize the unique physiological, psychological and behavioral issues associated with aging. They are keenly aware that symptoms of many illnesses and diseases can present differently in older adults than in younger ones. They understand the regressive effects of dementia, Alzheimer’s and other neurological disorders and recommend individualized treatment. And because multiple medications are often required to alleviate various conditions, your Northeast Medical Group geriatrician will evaluate your drug program to ensure it’s appropriate, safe and effective.

Growing old should be a rewarding stage of life, filled with joys and comforts. But it’s also a time when your healthcare may need attention, so it’s good to know that Northeast Medical Group geriatric specialists are always there for you.

Geriatrics works with Palliative Care professionals.
