The Great Catch Award: Creating a culture of safety at Northeast Medical Group

The Great Catch Award: Creating a culture of safety at Northeast Medical Group

Northeast Medical Group has made great strides in identifying safety issues. Daily Morning Escalation Safety Huddles (MESH) implemented in March bring together representatives from leadership, Operations, Lab Medicine, ITS, Facilities, Nursing and Patient Experience to report, review and act upon issues affecting patient safety and office functions.

“Our increasingly robust safety initiatives are leading us to reintroduce the NEMG Great Catch Award program,” said Richard Goldstein, MD, vice president, chief medical officer, NEMG.

Effective Oct. 1, NEMG will present a Great Catch Award each quarter to a recipient chosen by the Safety Committee from submitted nominations. The program recognizes staff who prevent harm from reaching patients by using the YNHHS High Reliability Organization (HRO) CHAMP behaviors:

Communicate Clearly
Handoff Effectively
Attention to Detail
Mentor Each Other – 200% Accountability
Practice and Accept a Questioning Attitude

Eligible employees are those who entered a “near-miss” into the event reporting system or whose managers or co-workers communicated their “Great Catch” to the NEMG Safety Committee. To be considered for the award, the employee’s actions must have prevented a specific incidence of patient harm and/or forced a system change that helped make NEMG a safer environment for patients.

Nominations should be submitted via e-mail to: [email protected] and should include:

  • Staff member name, role and manager
  • Practice location
  • Description of “Great Catch” (narrative)
  • Date of “Great Catch”
