On Feb. 15, 2020, the Stratford Hispanic Heritage Committee sponsored the Red Gala Scholarship Fundraiser at the Oronoque Country Club in Stratford. The evening featured dinner, dancing, a live band and raffles. Event proceeds went to the committee’s yearly college scholarship fund, which benefits graduating Latino students from Bunnell and Stratford High schools. Northeast Medical Group’s Victor Mejia, MD was keynote speaker.
More than 180 guests attended; and the committee reported that they will be awarding $10,000 in scholarships to recipients from the class of 2020. Coinciding with American Heart Month, the event also brought awareness to the Latino community on heart health and the importance of exercise and nutrition.
“As a Dominican-American who was once assisted by scholarships to achieve my goals of higher education, I found it especially warming to participate in this event to raise funds to help promising Latino students reach their academic goals,” Dr. Mejia said.
