Margaret McGovern, MD, PhD, executive vice president, chief physician executive, Physician Services

Northeast Medical Group is proud to welcome Margaret McGovern, MD, PhD to the role of chief physician executive for our new, aligned physician practice, effective January 1, 2023.

Alignment of NEMG and Yale Medicine, the Yale School of Medicine faculty practice, will enhance quality, service, and access while furthering our vision to become one of the nation’s premier academic health systems. Key areas of focus include quality, compliance, patient access and establishment of a clinically integrated network. Dr. McGovern will also continue to serve in her roles of CEO, Yale Medicine and deputy dean for clinical affairs in the School of Medicine.

In her chief physician executive role, Dr. McGovern will be advised by a Physician Enterprise Executive Committee composed of physician and administrative leaders. “We are doing transformative, far-reaching work that will enhance the experience of both patients and providers,” noted Dr. McGovern, when her new role was announced in December 2022 by Christopher O’Connor, chief executive officer and president, YNHHS.

Prior to joining YSM in July 2022, Dr. McGovern was the Knapp Professor of Pediatrics and dean for Clinical Affairs at Renaissance School of Medicine at Stony Brook University in New York and vice president of Stony Brook Medicine (SBM) Health System clinical programs and strategy.

Before assuming these roles in 2018, she was chair of Pediatrics and physician-in-chief at Stony Brook Children’s Hospital. She led the development and planning of Stony Brook Children’s Hospital and markedly expanded its pediatric clinical research and education programs. Dr. McGovern also led the Stony Brook faculty practice plan for six years during her tenure as chair of Pediatrics. In 2019, she led the formation of the SBM Clinically Integrated Network, which delivers high-quality, high-value care by building a population health platform. She served as the physician executive leader for the initiative.

Dr. McGovern received her PhD in genetics from the Mount Sinai Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences and her MD from Mount Sinai School of Medicine (now called Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai). She completed her residency in pediatrics and fellowships in clinical and molecular genetics at Mount Sinai Hospital before joining the faculty.

At Mount Sinai, she was vice chair of the Department of Genetics and Molecular Medicine and professor of human genetics, and of oncological sciences and obstetrics and gynecology. She was the program director for the NIH-funded General Clinical Research Center (GCRC) and carried out CDC- and NIH-funded research focused primarily on the integration of molecular genetic diagnostic testing into clinical practice and inborn errors of metabolism. She is considered a world authority on sphingolipidoses.

At Yale, Dr. McGovern leads development of the clinical strategy for the School of Medicine at an important juncture in the relationship between YSM and Yale New Haven Health System. She provides strategic counsel and is architect of YSM’s vision for its clinical enterprise.  As CEO of YM, she participates actively in the senior leadership group of the medical school’s academic health system and plays a key role in setting and realizing strategic goals. As deputy dean for Clinical Affairs, she serves as the physician leader representing the clinical mission of the School of Medicine in all venues. She works closely with the clinical chairs in the recruitment of clinical faculty, mentors the next generation of clinical leaders, and collaborates with the deputy deans of research and education to balance the needs for enhancing the academic and educational missions of YSM with clinical ambulatory operational efficiencies, quality improvement, and sound clinical finances.
