Biography
Kristin Edwards, MD, a board certified physician in Internal Medicine and Hospice and Palliative Medicine, serves as the Medical Director of Palliative Care at Bridgeport Hospital and Yale New Haven Health System. Dr. Edwards manages all aspects of the palliative care program at Bridgeport Hospital, including clinical care and management and education of staff.
Under Dr. Edwards’ leadership, Bridgeport Hospital has implemented several innovative programs that support patients with advance illnesses including the Burn-Palliative Care Partnership, which won the Corman IMPACT Honors Award from the Schwartz Center for Compassionate Care. She also supported the expansion of palliative care to Bridgeport Hospital Milford Campus and Smilow Cancer Hospital Care Center at Park Avenue Medical Center in Trumbull. In addition, Dr. Edwards is the Bridgeport Hospital Palliative Care Site Director for the Yale Geriatrics-Hospice and Palliative Medicine Fellowship.
Dr. Edwards leads and mentors a multidisciplinary team including physicians, advanced practice nurses, spiritual care, social work, and nursing. The team applies principles of palliative care to unique populations such as patients with sickle cell disease or burn injuries in addition to patients facing illnesses more traditionally considered serious illness.
In addition to practicing palliative care, Dr. Edwards teaches Palliative Medicine as an Assistant Clinical Professor of Medicine at Yale University School of Medicine. In 2019, Dr. Edwards was awarded as an Emerging Leader in Hospice and Palliative Medicine by the AAHPM, a national award given every 5 years to 40 leaders in the field of palliative care.
