Emmi video prepares patients for upcoming hospital stay
As part of the continued rollout of the Emmi Solutions patient education system across YNHHS, a new video that helps to answer patients’ questions and concerns about their upcoming hospital stay was launched on April 18, 2018.
“What to Expect During Your Hospital Stay” is a seven-minute interactive program that addresses topics such as the importance of communication with doctors and nurses, pain management, medication management, noise and cleanliness levels, and how to prepare for recovery at home. The program’s goal is to provide patients with education about their upcoming hospital visit in order to manage their expectations and allow for a more effective and satisfactory health experience. While the video itself is standardized for use across YNHHS, a custom introduction delivered by the CEO/president at each individual hospital is included and plays before the assigned program.
“At the core of patient-centered care is education and how we share information to help patients make decisions about their care,” said Michael Bennick, MD, chairman, Patient Experience Council, Yale New Haven Health. “Educational videos that walk patients through important details about their hospital stay enable them to be active, involved and informed partners in their own healthcare. We believe this will greatly enhance and enrich the patient experience at Yale New Haven Health. In addition, better communication with patients about their expectations prior to a hospital stay helps to improve their satisfaction afterwards.”
Any patient who is scheduled for an overnight stay at any of YNHHS’s delivery networks will receive a MyChart message, email or phone call with instructions on how to view the program before their arrival at the hospital. Patients will receive their programs automatically, with no manual effort from staff. However, to encourage patient compliance it is requested that staff verbally mention Emmi during any patient interactions and ask if the patient or families had any questions following the viewing of the programs.
