On April 27, NEMG employees from the Westerly, RI region volunteered at the Ocean Community YMCA’s Healthy Kids Day, part of a national initiative to improve children’s health and well-being. The free event drew approximately 200 children and was held in conjunction with the 21st Annual Pawcatuck River Duck Race, a fundraiser for local schools and non-profit organizations in the Westerly/Pawcatuck region.

NEMG staff set up a table with literature on healthy lifestyles, recipes and pediatric/adolescent health. Staff provided fresh fruit, along with goodie bags containing ice packs, stickers and activity sheets. Attractions and exercises included a bouncy house, education about the MYCHIP program, Zumba and swimming. Representatives from the Dylan Konakowitz Memorial Foundation were on-site to raise awareness about diabetes and a raffle was held for a signed jersey from New England Patriots player Rob Gronkowski.

“Thank you so much for attending our event, we truly appreciated that involvement and interaction with the community,” said Colin Sheehan, youth and family director, Ocean Community YMCA.
