YNHHS to launch imaging decision support tool
In June, Yale New Haven Health System launched ACR Select, a tool designed to help clinicians choose the most appropriate advanced imaging tests for patients.
Epic ordering screens with the new tool will launch first for emergency department and inpatient requests for advanced imaging, including CT, MRI and nuclear medicine. ACR Select is expected to launch for outpatient advanced imaging requests in the fall. ACR Select will not cover orders for plain films or ultrasound studies.
The tool includes American College of Radiology (ACR) evidence-based appropriateness criteria and instant decision support. Each requested test will receive an appropriateness score: Green (7-9), indicating the requested test is likely appropriate; yellow (4-6), the test may be appropriate; or red (1-3), indicating an alternate test is likely the best. For red-scored requests only, Epic will suggest alternative tests; however
The goals in implementing ACR Select include improving the testing process and experience for patients, by avoiding low-value tests; for ordering clinicians, by helping them request the correct test the first time; and for radiologists, by ensuring they have the best information for a targeted interpretation, and fewer canceled and reordered tests.
