CEO Message: July - August 2018

Dear Colleagues:

I hope you are enjoying your summer and have activities and fun trips planned with your family and friends.

My gratitude to each of you who attended the recent NEMG All Clinicians Forum in June. It was a terrific opportunity to share more about what is happening at NEMG and to hear your ideas, and I would like to acknowledge all of our presenters for their informative updates. Of note, Northeast Medical Group celebrated the grand opening of a new multispecialty center at 90 South Ridge St., Rye Brook, NY on July 23. This new location offers walk-in care, pediatrics, family medicine and blood draw with rotating specialists.

In this month’s newsletter, I will focus on physician burnout. This epidemic has gained significant national attention due to its common presence in the healthcare industry. Employee burnout is a long-term stress reaction often resulting in depersonalization, emotional exhaustion and a sense of low personal accomplishment. It can also lead to our colleagues leaving their practices.

Contributing factors to burnout include:

• Administrative burden
• Implementation of electronic health records (EHRs)
• Compassion fatigue
• Barriers to efficient communication
• Perceived lack of autonomy
• Inefficient workflows
• Competing career priorities
• Time constraints
• Poor work-home balance

Recently, at the YNHHS 2018 System Directors’ Meeting, special guest Amit Sood, MD, professor of medicine, Mayo Clinic College of Medicine, Rochester, MN, delivered a presentation titled The Resilient Option. Dr. Sood defines resilience as one’s ability to withstand and bounce back from adversity. I recommend the following practices to combat burnout:

• Gratitude – Greater attention to positivity and gratitude builds resilience.
• Mindful presence – Practicing mindful presence enables one to focus on what is truly important and meaningful, thus strengthening attention.
• Kindness – By cultivating kind thoughts, one can intentionally change the brain’s innate wiring to move past the tendency toward negativity and fear.
• Resilient mindset – A mindset guided by core values is important to a resilient and happier life.

As our work gets busy, let us be mindful in building resilience to cope with stress.
