Advocate For Business Women Receives Corporate Leader Award

Greenwich, Conn. (May 16, 2017) – Known as an advocate for women in business and healthcare, Prathibha Varkey, MBBS, president and chief executive officer of Yale New Haven Health Northeast Medical Group (NEMG), has been chosen as this year’s Corporate Leader in Moffly Media’s annual Women of Influence awards.

Dr. Varkey was recognized at an awards ceremony at the Women in Business Conference at Greenwich Country Club. The award honors women business leaders who innovate and succeed in their area of expertise.

“It is a humbling honor and a delight to accept this award on behalf of the patients we serve and the teams that make the magic happen at Yale New Haven Health,” said Dr. Varkey, who resides in Westport. “It has been a blessing to come to work every day to make our communities healthier and be with our patients in times of illness and health.”

“Dr. Varkey’s commitment to improve the health of the communities we serve is evident by her strong leadership and ability to expand our network of primary care physicians throughout the region,” said Christopher O’Connor, executive vice president and chief operating officer of Yale New Haven Health, who attended the event with about 20 colleagues. Dr. Varkey’s parents, who are visiting from India, were also on hand to congratulate their daughter.

NEMG represents more than 130 practices in Connecticut, New York and Rhode Island and more than 700 physicians and medical professionals affiliated with Bridgeport, Greenwich, Yale New Haven and Lawrence + Memorial Hospitals in Connecticut and Westerly Hospital in Rhode Island. Dr. Varkey is also a senior vice president at Yale New Haven Health.

Dr. Varkey earned her MBBS (MD equivalent) from Christian Medical College, Vellore, India. She completed her internal medicine residency at the Hospital of Saint Raphael and a preventive medicine fellowship at Mayo Clinic. She has a master's in public health from Harvard School of Public Health, a master's in health professions education from the University of Illinois, and an MBA from the Carlson School of Management at the University of Minnesota. She is an adjunct professor of medicine and preventive medicine at the Mayo Clinic College of Medicine, Rochester, MN. A nationally recognized expert in quality improvement, Dr. Varkey is president and a board of trustees member of the American College of Medical Quality.

Dr. Varkey is also the editor of two textbooks and an author whose work has appeared in more than 70 publications.
